Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazagam (AMMK) General Secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran has vehemently criticized the current Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in Tamil Nadu, branding their promised farm loan waiver scheme as a “deception” and a complete betrayal of the farming community. Dhinakaran asserted that the DMK, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, had made grand promises during the election campaigns regarding the comprehensive waiver of agricultural loans, a move that resonated deeply with the agrarian populace of the state. However, he argued that the implementation, or rather the lack thereof, has fallen far short of these assurances, leaving farmers disillusioned and burdened by debt.
Speaking at a press conference, Dhinakaran highlighted several key points of contention regarding the government’s approach to farm loan waivers. He pointed out that the scheme, as announced, is not a blanket waiver for all farmers and all types of loans. “The DMK government had promised a complete farm loan waiver, a promise that brought hope to thousands of farmers across Tamil Nadu. However, what we are witnessing now is a farcical implementation that benefits only a select few,” Dhinakaran stated, his voice echoing the sentiments of many farmers who feel overlooked. He further accused the ruling party of employing deceptive tactics to win votes and then failing to deliver on their fundamental commitments once in power.
Dhinakaran drew a stark contrast between the DMK’s promises and their actions, alleging a deliberate attempt to mislead the public. He emphasized that the agricultural sector is the backbone of Tamil Nadu’s economy and that farmers have been facing immense challenges due to various factors, including climate change, fluctuating market prices, and the burden of accumulated debt. A genuine and substantial farm loan waiver, he argued, was crucial for their survival and for the revival of the agricultural sector.
The AMMK leader also raised concerns about the transparency and accountability of the current government in handling such critical issues. He reiterated that the current farm loan waiver scheme by the DMK government is nothing short of a “cheating” tactic, designed to appease a segment of the population while ignoring the broader needs of the farming community.
